If the official car of Manhattan is a taxi, then the concepts making their debuts at the New York auto show fit in perfectly with the idea of people moving. These five concepts show that the industry continues to meld the utilitarian aspects of trucks and SUVs with the creature comforts and styling of more traditional passenger cars. And in Toyota's case, with the Scion, the company is further exploring the idea of a small urban commuter.

According to Honda's upscale division, the Acura ZDX concept "blurs the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle." This stylish 5-door hatch disguises the rear doors by hiding the handles in the vehicle's rakish C-pillar. The all-glass tailgate provides SUV-like access to the car's highly functional cargo area. And yet the overall look of the ZDX is that of a 4-door coupe. The ZDX is powered by a V-6 engine driving all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Look for a production version of this cutting edge mid-size entry to go on sale this fall.

Hyundai Nuvis Concept

As the 11th signature design from the Korean automaker's California design studio, the Hyundai Nuvis Concept blends shapely car styling on a crossover platform that delivers the utility of an SUV. In addition to showcasing a new approach to crossover design, the Nuvis Concept also features Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive architecture that blends lithium-polymer battery technology with a traditional gasoline engine. The vehicle is equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission along with a parallel electric drive system with an all-electric mode. Other innovative features include large single-piece gullwing doors that provide access to the front and rear seating areas.
